Preparing for 2020
Christmas is in 2 days. And my first post is going to be me actively avoiding that topic. I am not beginning this blog because of the Christmas. I'm beginning this blog because writing more consistently is my only New Year's resolution.
Well, kind of. I mean, I have 75 ideas for New Years resolutions. Drink more water, sew some patterns I've never tried, pray more, have a morning routine and stick to it, eat more vegetables, lose weight, clean out the basement, live a life with less clutter, save for a vacation... the list is long. But the truth is, I could make a list of everything that will be "different" about 2020 and it would not mean much. Routines are hard to break, especially when you are attempting to break 75 of them at once. I mean, if they were easy to break, I would be a skinny, water-drinking, minimalist by now. Like many people, my resolutions are always kind of the same. Also like many people, not too much comes of them.
Which is why I had decided to start this journal and also, not make any resolutions. December is already the peak of excess, anxiety, stress, depression... Why do we choose this time of year to reflect on how the year went? As credit card bills are getting higher and decadent food is being served and every minute is over-scheduled... we are supposed to create meaningful ideas for how we want to live our next year? No wonder we all want to spend less money and lose weight and stop feeling so busy!
So here is my idea: Instead of making resolutions now, I will make 2-5 small goals monthly. The goals will be based on what is important to me in that moment. Some will be super attainable, concrete goals. Some will be challenges. Some will be more abstract. Maybe some of them will be worth continuing into other months. Maybe some of them will be epic failures.
In addition, every week I'll write in this journal. Some weeks, it will be about how my goals are going. Some weeks, it might be about my life or my sewing. Some weeks, maybe I'll try some creative writing. Maybe someday I'll share my journal with friends and family. Maybe this is as private as a public journal on the internet can be. Who knows? I'm excited to give this a try.
Much love. See you soon!
